On January 7, 1977, the founding line-up of Toto came together for the first time at Davlen Studios in North Hollywood, California to begin tracking demos that would become the band’s debut album. Co-founders David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, alongside Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and David Hungate, launched a career that continues to remain celebrated, beloved and relevant close to a half century later. With each passing year, the audience gets younger, with new audiences continuing to discover this timeless repertoire.
The band’s self-titled debut was released by Columbia Records in October, 1978. Hydra followed in 1979, and Turn Back in 1981, prior to the juggernaut that became Toto IV was released in 1982. That album won six Grammy Awards amongst which were “Record of the Year” for “Rosanna,” “Album of the Year,” and “Producer of the Year.” Isolation (1984), Fahrenheit (1986), The Seventh One (1988), Kingdom of Desire (1992), Tambu (1995) and Mindfields (1999) followed. The continued to release new repertoire periodically that includes Through The Looking Glass (2002), Falling In Between (2006), Toto XIV (2015) and Old Is New (2018). In 1984, the band’s soundtrack for David Lynch’s Dune was released.
Over the course of five decades, the global audience for Toto has continued to grow. As listeners gravitated to streaming, it has only increased the band’s popularity with cumulative streams now exceeding nine billion plays across all DSPs. Toto’s largest hit “Africa” has achieved the milestone of TWO BILLION plays at Spotify alone, while “Hold The Line” now exceeds ONE BILLION streams. The significant streaming volume is not relegated to the three most popular songs, but broader across the band’s entire catalog. The ballad “I’ll Be Over You” has emerged as the fourth most streamed composition with over a million streams every month, while “Georgy Porgy” consistently exceeds three quarter of a million monthly plays. Songs that include “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “Stop Loving You,” “Lea,” “Pamela,” “I Will Remember,” “99,” “Make Believe,” “I’ll Supply The Love,” and “Stranger In Town,” are all capturing significant streaming activity alongside several others.
On the sales side, “Africa” has been certified DIAMOND by the RIAA (10 million sold), with cumulative sales now approaching 11M. Additionally, “Hold The Line” has been certified triple platinum for sales of three million copies, while “Rosanna” hit the milestone of double platinum for sales of two million copies. Additionally, “I’ll Be Over You” is now certified as a gold single for sales of a half a million copies by the RIAA. Cumulative Toto album sales are 50 MILLION plus copies. For all members past and present, one of the most exciting details to celebrate is the continual aging down of the band’s audience. Consistently, more than half of the billion annual streams are plays from those 34 years or younger. The live audience present night to night has truly become a celebration of three generations coming together.
The ensemble features band leaders Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals) and Joseph Williams (vocals), joined by Warren Ham (horns, percussion, vocals), John Pierce (bass), Keith Carlock (drums), Dennis Atlas (keyboards, vocals) and Rai Thistlethwayte (keyboards, vocals). Throughout 2025 and 2026, Toto performed for more than 850,000 ticket holders across the globe.
Steve Lukather shares, “From the earliest stages of our career, Japan has supported Toto. There is a mutual affection between us and the entire country. I can’t wait to bring them a great show featuring Joe, myself and a band comprised of world-class musicians. It’s going to be a great time for everyone in the venue come March.”
Joe Williams offers, “I joined Toto back in 1986, and my first assignment was to head to Japan before the band for some promotion. It was my first trip there, and I instantly fell in love with Japan and its wonderful people. I remember the tour as if it were yesterday—it was one of the best times of my life. I’m so proud to have been a part of Toto’s 50-year history. It’s been a labor of love. I was blessed to have worked with Jeff, Mike, and Steve Porcaro, David Paich, and, of course, my lifelong friend and brother, Steve Lukather. Over the decades, I’ve had the great privilege to also work and perform with Bobby Kimball, David Hungate, Simon Phillips, Greg Phillinganes, and the many other brilliant musicians who have contributed their talents to Toto. It’s been the joy of my life to help keep it all going with Steve Lukather these last 17 years. I’m hopeful that we can continue this wonderful journey into the future. I’m so proud of our current Toto, Dogz Of Oz. Sharing the stage with the amazing talents of Warren Ham, John Pierce, Keith Carlock, Rai Thistlethwait, and Dennis Atlas. I can’t wait to come back to Japan and perform on this historic 50th anniversary!”
Co-founding keyboardist David Paich shares, “As I look back on a half century of time having passed since many of our biggest hits were written and recorded, I never imaged this repertoire would continue to be discovered by new generation so many decades later. To have written songs that continue to be loved, sung, and so meaningful to the lives of so many, it’s a realization of dreams we all shared as young men. Thank you to each and every individual who has listened, attended shows, or just professed the love of our band. When Jeff Porcaro and I co-founded Toto in 1977, and then brought Steve Lukather, David Hungate, Steve Porcaro, and Bobby Kimball into the frame, no one could have anticipated the ride that’s followed for close to 50 years. I want to acknowledge and share my appreciation for the unwavering, endless commitment Luke and Joe continue to make, joined by some of the best musicians on Earth, to continue to travel the world keeping our music alive. Enabling many in their teens and twenties to see the band for the first time, with new future generations being aware of this music that’s been so special to all of us. With the deepest gratitude I can share, Dave.”
Details tied to where the 50th anniversary celebration will stage appearances will be forthcoming as plans are confirmed in the coming weeks and months. Toto was inducted in to the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009.
