In partnership with Night Time Stories Ltd, the trio recently announced news of A LA SALA, Khruangbin’s first studio LP in four years - out April 5 on Dead Oceans. The band introduced the project with ‘A Love International’, a song illustrating the reflective, celebratory nature of A LA SALA with its heartfelt vocal flutterings underneath propulsive guitar and bass interplay.
The latest single ‘May Ninth’ followed recently, evoking the group’s signature, wistful warmth over environmental sounds both man-made and natural (in this case, actual birds singing in the background).
From the get-go, Khruangbin’s journey has been its own: a sound and visual representation with few precedents, ignoring pop expectations, relying only on internal inspirations, and many visions. It’s a mindset of penetrating the self, connecting to the surrounding world, and modelling your own life experiences. The building blocks then for A LA SALA’s 12 songs were jigsaw pieces found in Khruangbin’s creative past, parts of the band not lost, but not yet tapped into. Having stockpiled ideas originally set down as off-the-cuff recordings (voice memos made at sound checks, on long voyages, as absentminded epiphanies), they began fitting those pieces together in the studio for A LA SALA.
Over the last two years, Khruangbin has remained unwavering in their musical vision, selling out shows at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and London’s Alexandra Palace. They’ve released five live LPs showcasing their stage prowess - featuring storied guests such as Toro y Moi, Men I Trust and Nubya Garcia - collaborated with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré honouring Vieux’s late father, Ali Farka Touré, with the album Ali highlighted everywhere from The New York Times and NPR (“labyrinthine fusion of dub, blues and Malian grooves,”), to GQ who says “there’s a placelessness to the band Khruangbin that, counterintuitively, gives them their gravity.” That same year the band released their second collaborative EP with Leon Bridges, the sultry, chart-topping Texas Moon, which arrived to widespread acclaim from The New York Times, NPR, Uproxx, Vulture, FADER while pushing the boundaries of psychedelic R&B.
Next month Khruangbin are poised to do it all over again, mapping out an expansive run of global live dates through 2024. With festivals across the summer including the likes of Coachella, Bonnaroo, Latitude and Nos Alive, the band’s recently-announced North American tour is now joined by headline dates across Europe and the UK as detailed below. Formed in New Delhi, India around 2010, Peter Cat Recording Co. is a group that's mutated over time, shedding members and accruing more, always evolving musically with each album: from gypsy jazz to psychedelic cabaret; ballroom waltzes to epic space disco; bossa supernova to uneasy listening.
The story of Peter Cat Recording Co. has unfolded across multiple continents, a cast of creators and perhaps more than anything, an unwavering vision to be that band from India that will challenge just what music from the region can be. In broadening their listener base to North America, UK, Europe and Oceania, they have presented a canonical reference point to both Indian and international fans alike: there is tremendous value in persistence and not pandering to the expectations of others. In India, not doing so is an unprecedented feat, and a testament to just how much their audience was waiting for that door to open.
